Buruli ulcer disease (BUD), caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, involves the skin, subcutaneous fatty tissue, and bones and predominantly affects children 15 years of age. If left untreated, contractures may cause severe functional limitation. Standardized antimycobacterial treatment consists of rifampin (RMP) and streptomycin administered for 8 weeks. An oral regimen combiningRMPand clarithromycin is currently under clinical evaluation (1–3). Notwithstanding the efficiency of chemotherapy, treatment failures and various types of secondary lesions have been reported, suggesting the need for customized clinical management strategies (4–6).en_US
