| dc.description.abstract | The construction industry has long been recognised as an industry with an unacceptable accident record globally, of which Ghana is no exception. However, despite efforts being made to ensure a reduction in the high injury and fatality rates in the industry, their persistence continues to frustrate the industry. Safety on a construction project is a shared responsibility amongst personnel; from the top management to the lower management. Not prioritising safety in a construction firms affect the entire success of the project, thus, the need to give it the necessary attention. This research takes a first step in aiming to identify some of the safety practices currently being observed at various construction firms. It further went on to examine constraints these firms face in implementing these safety practices. Potential improvement measures are then identified for the constraints recognised. The research methodology was carried out over three phases. The first phase provided background information on construction safety, which was gathered from literature. This helped to capture key issues that helped in developing the questionnaire in the second phase. The third phase of the research methodology focused on the analysis of the data collected using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS). The findings revealed the safety practices which are being observed in the various construction firms and the constraints limiting the full effectiveness of the practices. The results also showed the potential improvement measures which needs to be given a lot of consideration. The research made recommendations on how to improve safety management practices. | en_US |
