The purpose of any institution is to achieve the fundamental aim for which it has been established. In fulfilling this aim, various factors need to be considered. One of these factors is the need to look at the human resource factor which will be responsible for ensuring that the activities of the institution are carried out. In discharging these responsibilities, certain measures need to be put in place to ensure that the workers are actually performing to the expectation of the institution. One of such measures is performance appraisal. Bolga polytechnic existed for ten (10) years without performance appraisal. Performance appraisal serves as a check, which exposes strengths and weaknesses of staff and direction of the organization. Good performances are awarded and the bad ones are given various types of training to address their weaknesses. Based on the above, the researcher sought to investigate into what the employer and employees perceive about performance appraisal, impact of performance appraisal on workers productivity and the benefits or otherwise that can be derived from the appraisal process at Bolgatanga polytechnic. A total of 86 employees were drawn and used for the study. Out of this number 42 were senior members, 33 were senior staff and 11 were junior staff. A well structured questionnaire made up of close ended, open ended and likert scale type questions was used in gathering data for the study. The study revealed that employees of the polytechnic perceived appraisal as gocfd because it brings a lot of benefits to the employer and employees hence they welcome it if it is instituted. It was recommended that management should introduce appraisal into polytechnic, taking into consideration the benefit that it offers to the employer and employees at large.en_US
