An Environmental Audit was carried out on the Mami-Water and Akosombo Depots of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST). It was aimed at verifying the extent to which the two depots were adhering to the Country’s Environmental Laws. It was also to ascertain whether adequate measures had been put in place to protect the environment from undue pollution that could be caused by the depots’ activities. The audit also examined arrangements put in place with regards to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) issues. It therefore considered every aspect of the depots’ operations ranging from the means by which the petroleum products were brought into the depots and the conditions under which they were being stored and distributed. The audit process went on further to consider how all these could impact on the health and safety of workers at the depots and inhabitants of neighbouring communities. One common feature that runs through all the results obtained was the absence of a monitoring regime for all aspects of the depots’ operations. Worker awareness in Environmental and Safety issues was also not satisfactory. Again the arrangements put in place with regards to Occupational Health and Safety was also found to be inadequate. It was also observed that copies of the company’s composite Environmental Management Plan (EMP) -which contains all the environmental plans and programmes- have not been given out to the individual depots (are being kept at the Head Office of the company). As a result of the above situation, provisions in the EMP were not known to the staff at depots who are suppose to be directly responsible for implementation The above omissions and anomalies, it was discovered, were affecting the smooth operation of the Company’s Environmental Management System which itself is an important prerequisite for sound environmental management. The audit report also includes proposals and recommendations aimed at addressing the defects and anomalies found.en_US
