Title: The effect of N.P.K fertilizer, spacing and intercropping on the growth and seed yield of two local varieties of Castor (Ricinus communis L.)

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted at the Arable crops section of the University of Science and Technology farms, Kumasi (60 43’N, 10 36’W), in 1983 and 1984 to study the effect of a commercial fertilizer (N-P-K 15-15-15) and spacing on the growth, seed yield and oil production of two local varieties of Castor - Local Red and Local Green. In 1984 a third experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of cassava (variety Atra) on the growth and seed yield of Castor when the two crops are inter-planted. Results obtained from the first two experiments indicated that the two varieties of Castor differ in their growth habits. The Green produces taller plants whilst the Red spreads more and matures earlier. The Green Variety produces a greater seed yield and oil content of seed by weight than the Red. The seeds contained 52.1% and 38.2% oil by weight respectively. N.P.K (15-15-15) fertilizer was applied at 0 kg/ha, 33 kg/ha and 66 kg/ha. The fertilizer reduced plant height decreased the vegetative growth period and generally decreased the seed yield too. With the Red Variety plants given no commercial fertilizer produced the highest seed yield and with the Green, maximum values were obtained at 33 kg/ha beyond which yield reductions occurred. The three spacing adopted were 1 m x 0.3 m, 1m x 0.6 m and 1 m x 0.9 m. Maximum vegetative growth for the Red Variety was obtained at 1 in x 0.6 a but the Green Variety, being wore vigorous, produced maximum growth at 1 m x 0.9 m. Plants under 1 in x 0.3 a had the longest vegetative growth period. Although seed yield per plant was least at 1m x 0.3m it was at 1m x 0.9 m that the lowest seed yield per unit area was produce. The maximum number of racemes and capsules and seed weight per plant were produced at 1m x 0.6 m which emerged at the best spacing respect to seed yield per unit. From the intercropping experience it was observed that cassava would not have significantly depressive effects on the growth of castor. The latter grew faster and appeared to be the better competitor of the two. However, when castor was intercropped it produced 37% less than its pure stand seed yield.
