|Abstract: ||The aim of this thesis is to make an artistic analysis of wood carving based on oral traditions of Begoro. The symbolic relationship between wood carving and oral traditions was analysed by comparing the content of the two entities. To avoid a parochial combination of the object, both the content and form of the selected wood carving were given due consideration. The extent to which the wood carvings project religious, social, political and aesthetic value of the Begoros was evaluated and compared to other objects with different or the same oral traditions. This constituted a test for internal and external consistencies in the use of oral traditions.
For purposes of this thesis, oral tradition broadly consists of myths. The major objects of study are located in the Begoro area which is the headquarters of the Benkwa – Division of Akia Abuakwa. Comparisons were made with objects from Ahwia in Ashanti, Kyebi and Kwahu areas in the Eastern region. The first chapter locates the problem and its setting in an introduction. The second chapter comments on views about the origin of Art interpretation of Art objects with oral traditions was evaluated through a survey of variation in the close variations in the meaning of forms and their effects of society. The chapter closes by introducing the people of Begoro and their land.
The third chapter discusses wood carving and myths. It opens with the regards for myths by both the carver and the Begoro people, following by an analysis of selected wood based on myths. The study is concluded by summary, deductions and a solution to the main problem and recommendations for further inquires. All photographs in the thesis were taken by the author, Charles Breku Asihene, and all drawn illustrations were made by him except the Photostat copies.|
