Abstract
The word telecommunication can be defined as ‘the science and technology of communication by telephony, radio, television etc. From the above definition, it can be seen that telecommunication covers the whole of the media range with the exception of certain aspects of the print media. It is a very powerful media tool which can be used to bridge people, technologies, places etc. together. One should think of the world without telephones, facsimiles (fax) telexes, mails, television, t radio etc. This would mean one travelling long distances just to discuss a problem, seek advises, have copies of contracts, view a scene, etc and one may look at the cost that will be incurred, the time wastage, the risk, the opportunity cost etc. These things are now done within seconds if the technology is available. Telecommunication is worth investing in, since it covers the whole of the electronic media, it is even better than a gold mine. Sometimes it is referred to as the ‘Intangible gold mine of the air. Infact, the electronic media, would stop to operate only when we humans stop to exist. This is quite an utopian idea as it can only be achieved when the world comes to an end. Unfortunately, investments in telecommunication, is very low in this country of ours, due to political and economic situations that we find ourselves in, but it is the most lucrative area where if one invests in, one is sure to get every penny back in the smallest possible time, though it is capital intensive. And this is the area where companies who already have some equipment’s or who have established themselves in the telecommunication area needs to take advantage of the government’s privatization process and expand their network so that other people can ‘rent’ their facility and use it to either broadcast or for transmission purpose. Telecommunication, therefore as far as the electronic media is concerned can be analogous to a real estate developer who has a number of houses for rent. Therefore when, a company comes to establish in the area, they would rent the property for their workers, since it would be very expensive to put up houses for its workers in the shortest possible time. In this case, Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited is the real estate developer who needs to expand its network, especially in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana where other residual companies like Capital Telecom, Fantasia TV, Millicom Ghana Limited etc. are planning to invest through their renting to other people and also direct user renting. Ghana Telecom (Sunyani), which is the main telecommunication company in Sunyani, needs to improve on their social status, and also improve on the physical outlook of its buildings by means of refurbishing, remodeling of existing building, putting up new buildings to accommodate the new technological advancement and also to project the prestige that it has enjoyed over the years. It has always been observed that when you dress properly, it makes you look smart but the dress or shirt does not improve on your knowledge or your report that you are presenting but make the presenter look smart. Hence Ghana Telecom needs to put on a new ‘shirt’ to look smart. Also the environment in which such a facility is going to be placed also counts, in that, the building must be serve as environmental filter to whatever function it is to take that is to say, that the building should be regionalistic enough. But can it be achieved?
