Abstract: The Dangme are a people group comprising eight tribes found in the Greater-Accra and Eastern Regions of Ghana. The Bible has been translated into Dangme. One of the texts in the New Testament of the Dangme translations of the Bible that poses a hermeneutical challenge is Matthew 6:12. The Dangme translation of the verse literally means that God “loans us our sins” when we confess our wrong-doings to him for forgiveness. Personal interviews with some Dangme scholars revealed that there are three ways by which Matthew 6:12 could be translated: Ngôô wa tômi ômâ kâ pa wô... [Loan us our wrong-doings…]; Ngôô wa yayami ômε a he hiô wo ô kε ke wô... [Forgive us the punishment and curse of our sins…]; Ngôô wa tômi ômâ kâ ke wô... [Forgive us our wrong-doings…]. It is being contended that these translations and interpretations have shortfalls; and that the translation and interpretation of Matthew 6:12 that fits into the context of the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-15) and is in concert with Dangme religiocultural thought is: Ngôô wa yayami ômε kε ke wô kaa bô nε wô hu waa kε kee nihi nε tôô wa nôô [Forgive us our sins, just as we also forgive those who sin against us].
