Abstract
This study examines the role that the Graphic Designer can play in the Leather industry. The economic importance of leather as a cultural product has attracted both local and foreign interests into the areas of investment, manufacture and trade, especially for export. Unfortunately, such factors as the quality of raw materials, tools, techniques and style are lacking. It is therefore imperative that these artistic factors (dyeing of leather, idea development, design and production processes and finishing) be addressed to make the leather industry more viable economic venture. It took quite an elaborate view of the Leatherwork and the Graphic Design as the main components of this research by reviewing literature related to the topic. The necessary research methodology and devices were discussed. Out of this, was the undertaking of experimental production of sample leather products, which were tested against the existing ones? Some results including the nature of the current leather products in the market and the effect the sample leather products had on the market, were gathered and discussed. Upon careful deliberations, which preceded summary and conclusions, it is recommended among others that traditional leatherworkers be introduced to the identified techniques available under Graphic Design. It is also important that the thesis report be considered as a reference material for use in our educational institutions.
