Abstract: | This research was to assess and examine training and development as a tool for employee
performance among project managers in the road construction industry in Accra. The objectives
of the study was to identify reasons for training and development among project managers in the
road construction industry, Accra and to determine whether training and development is an
essential tool for performance.
Thus, fifty (50) respondents were sampled for the study out of project managers in the road
construction firms in Accra. The sample for the study was selected using purposive sampling
selection method. In all 50 project managers were administered with questionnaires and supported
with semi-structured interview as primary data for the study.
Together with secondary data analysed, the study revealed that firms in the road construction
industry did not consider training and development as a priority. As a result, little training
programs were organized for the staff which can be attributed to lack of commitment among staff
which made employees to under perform.
It was concluded that road construction firms in Accra had little or no training and development
programs that will ensure employees adjust to organizational changes and environmental changes.
Base on the findings of the objectives the researcher recommended that as part of firms objectives
and new strategies, training and development should be implemented to facilitate training
programs quarterly, Human Resource Managers must consult training expect for formulation and
implementation of training and development programs to help improve the skills, knowledge, and
abilities of their employees and managers should organize counseling sessions to listen to their
grievances and to find out what motivates them to perform to use that as bases of training and
development in determining whether training and development is an essential tool for
performance. |
