Title: Design and Constriction of a Preservative Treatment Plant for Sympodial Bamboo Species in Ghana

Abstract: Bamboo has a long and well established tradition as a building and construction material in Ghana. An important consideration, which limits the use of bamboo, is its durability. Bamboo is subject to attack by fungi and insects. This brings the expected life of the bamboo to not more than five years.The high temperature preservative treatment plant for sympodial bamboos in Ghana was designed and built with locally accessible raw material, locally composed low density bricks and mortar and locally manufactured gas burners. This is a solution to the poor preservation methods adopted by local craftsmen, industry and some research institutions working with bamboo. Unhurried circumstances of the conflagration box of the boiler of the plant enhances utmost heat maintenance in keeping boiler temperature high for effectual leaching out of starch,lignin, sugar and other gummy substances which form the principal food of the degrading agents of the bamboo and effective penetration of chemical preservatives to render the sympodial bamboo preserved.
