Title: Implementation of e-learning in Ghanaian universities: a case study of KNUST

Abstract: This study explores the implementation of e-learning in Ghanaian universities with KNUST as a case study. The objectives of the study examined the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning to KNUST, the various types of e-learning systems considered by KNUST, the 'Moodle' E-learning system adopted by KNUST, the strategies involved in the e-learning system, the challenges faced by KNUST in the implementation of its e-learning system along with possible solutions and finally a recommendation on critical issues to be considered for the effective implementation of the e-learning system. A descriptive study with a cross-sectional design comprising of 125 interviewees was done. The findings indicated that, the advantages of e-leaming for KNUST far outweigh the disadvantages of e-learning at KNUST. Furthermore a type of e-learning system which blends the advantages of a course management system and an open source system is ideal for KNUST. In addition, KNUST's Moodle e-learning system has been well customised to suit the university. However, KNUST's e-lepning implementation strategy has been a failure due to a wide variety of reasons. Ch^enges to implementing KNUST's e-learning system included inadequate ICT infrastructure, inadequate funds and inadequate ICT staff. Solutions to the challenges included provision of ICT infrastructure over a period and expansion of KNUST intranet and internet to non¬¨residential student areas via wireless. Among recommendations made were regular e- learning workshops organised for students and lecturers to enhance awareness, the drawing and implementation of an elaborate e-learning policy by the university and establishment of a reward system to motivate lecturers blend e-learning into their face to face lectures For universities in Ghana, recommendations were made for them to adopt e- learning to augment and highly impact teaching and learning given the ever-increasing enrolment figures.
