Title: Flexural and shear behaviour of reinforced concrete beams made from recycled materials

Abstract: Construction demolition waste is fast becoming an environmental nuisance in developing countries such as Ghana where central business area construction projects are common. In this experimental study, 50% recycled concrete beams were made using aggregates demolished from three year old concrete components that had been tested to failure in the laboratory. The aim was to investigate the response and applicability of recycled concrete technology using steel bars milled from recycled scrap metal. Therefore, the flexural and shear resistance of 12 No. conventional concrete beams and 12 No. 50% recycled concrete beams were investigated. From the experimental results, a short-term factor of safety of approximately 1.55 against collapse for NC beams and that of approximately 1.75 for RC beams were obtained. This implies that the use of BS8110 to design and construct beams made of up to 50% recycled concrete aggregates is conservative and that prediction of collapse loads is accurate. In Ghana, it is therefore recommended that for minor structural elements such as lintels in single storey buildings, up to 50% recycled concrete aggregates may be used provided the design is to the specifications of BS 8110.
