Title: Empirical assessment of Ghanaian construction industry innovation practices: contracting firms’ perspective

Abstract: There is the need for greater efficiency and effectiveness to be achieved in every construction industry despite this, the industry is constantly berated for being a poor innovator in comparison to other industries. Adopting pre-existing solutions to transform a project from an idea into reality is not enough. This is because every project requires new and specific technical solutions. This necessitated the empirical assessment of Ghanaian Construction industry contracting firm’s innovation practices. Quantitative research approach was used for the study. Sixty (60) survey questionnaires were designed and administered personally to D1K1 and D2K2 contractors in the Kumasi metropolis and a total number of fifty-two (52) were retrieved representing a response rate of 86.7%. The data gathered were organised and analysed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis and relative importance index (RII). The study findings were contained within five factor groups which include Innovative technologies and systems, Innovative materials management, Computerisation and process improvement, Innovative design tools and Innovative procurement systems. It was found that innovative design tools were frequently adopted by contracting firms in Ghana whiles Innovative technologies and systems were rarely adopted. In order to improve upon the innovativeness of contracting firms, barriers hindering these firms from being innovative should be dealt with accordingly. The Government of Ghana should come up with initiatives such as rewarding contracting firms for their higher rates of innovation adoption in relation to others in the industry.
