Abstract: Out of 71 fire cases recorded in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) between 2013 and 2014, 54 occurred in student housing facilities. Student housing are high fire risk kind of facilities due to large concentration of combustible materials in rooms. Several number of floors with limited means of escape and large student population sizes and careless behaviour are common. This study presents the results of a survey assessing the adequacy of fire safety measures in halls and privately-owned student hostels at KNUST. Using a mixed method of research strategies and techniques, thirty three (33) fire safety attributes with requisite standard requirements were identified and used as the variables to determine the adequacy of fire safety measures in the student housing facilities. Forty two (42) halls and registered hostels representing 58% of recognised student housing facilities at KNUST were assessed using the simple random sampling method. The findings revealed that, majority of the fire safety measures in the surveyed student housing at KNUST are inadequate. Furthermore, the main causes of fire outbreaks are cooking fire, technical faults and carelessness. This paper concludes that, fire safety measures in student housing can be improved by providing adequate kitchen facilities, means of escape elements and fire equipment, and enforcement of regulations.
