Abstract: Water is an essential commodity to building infrastructure, however it may have adverse effects on the same infrastructure it serves if it is not handled properly. Water discharge (condensate) from air conditioners is a common phenomenon in Ghana; which in most cases drains on the building fabric. However, the deficiency of water supply in Ghana over the years is further threatened by the current change of global climate conditions and pollution of water bodies by mining and other environmental activities. Efforts to finding alternative water sources to annex this finite resource is increasingly necessary. The study was focused on quantifying condensate from one LG one horsepower (0.7355kW) air conditioner in an office space (6.84m2) at KNUST, and a laboratory analysis conducted to establish its potential usefulness. The experimental strategy within the quantitative method was employed to collect data. The research found a condensate recovery of 1090.5 litters, over a period of 237 working days, equivalent to 0.0531mL/s/6.84m2; slightly higher than Guz’s formula of 6-7mL/s/1000m2 (0.041 – 0.048mL/s/6.84m2) of air conditioned space. The laboratory analysis conducted on the condensate, showed that the condensate is of good quality compared to international and local standards. The study will provide stakeholders/professionals in the building industry knowledge of the effects of condensate on the building infrastructure and also promote condensate recovery in Ghana.
